"Feminism isn't about making women strong. Women are already strong. It's about changing the way the world perceives that strength."

About

Communication Challenge

COM 536 is a foundational class for CommLead graduate students at the University of Washington. This is a leadership class about creativity, personal narrative, and relationships. As a final project, students must conceive, create, and present an original work that reflects professional ambitions and relates to a field within Communication. A communication challenge question is conceived and a creative solution is created.

How can the television industry better communicate and portray strong female characters in the 21st century?

Personal Thoughts

When it comes to popular culture there are certain ways women are portrayed and expected to act. Most leading characters in television shows are males along with most of the production team. There is a lack of strong female characters in TV shows. It's time that women have integral roles in the plot apart from helping men realize theirs. I would like to see the entertainment industry pursue better portrayal and representation of women in a more appropriate way. In addition, I want to see more women in the television industry. For instance, women directors, producers, showrunners, writers, etc.

Purpose/Solution

This site was made in hopes of redefining the portrayal of women in television by creating a safe space for women to rage against the patriarchy in the industry. Also, a place where resources can be found and connections that can be made. Stories/testimonies from women, mentor/mentee program, calendar of events, etc.
